The Entrepreneurial Mindset: From Trucking to Sports Franchises

People often ask me how a single person ends up running a trucking company, professional junior ice hockey franchises, fitness gyms, custom apparel printing shops, and local retail outlets. On paper, these industries have nothing in common. In reality, they are driven by the exact same engine: operations, trust, and local leadership.

When we founded Big Sky Specialized Carriers, the goal was simple: move freight safely across the rugged Northwest. Trucking is a low-margin, high-logistics business where precision is everything. That operational discipline proved to be the blueprint for every venture that followed. Whether managing transit schedules for heavy trucks or organizing game-day logistics for the Butte Cobras ice hockey team, the principles of coordination remain identical.

Diversity in business is also a shield against economic storms. When one sector faces headwinds, another provides stability. More importantly, it creates jobs. Across Montana, our ventures have employed hundreds of locals—mechanics, printers, coaches, trainers, and retail staff. Business is the ultimate form of community building.

To the young entrepreneur, my advice is simple: do not limit yourself to a single niche. Learn the underlying laws of cash flow, personnel management, and customer relations. Once you master the ledger, you can build a bridge to any industry you choose.
