Why We Volunteer: The Call of the Skies

To anyone who holds a private pilot license, I want to ask you a question: What is the purpose of your wings? Is it to fly weekend $100 hamburger runs, or is it to make a meaningful difference in the lives of families who have run out of options?

Volunteer flying through networks like Angel Flight West is one of the most rewarding endeavors a pilot can experience. The aviation community is blessed with resources, skills, and freedom. When we use those blessings to transport patients who cannot afford or endure commercial travel, we elevate the entire purpose of aviation.

If you are considering volunteering, the entry barriers are highly manageable. You need a valid pilot certificate, an airworthy aircraft (owned or rented), and a commitment to safety. You decide when and where to fly; the dispatch system handles the patient screening and logistics. It integrates seamlessly into any private pilot's schedule.

The skies are wide, and the need is constant. Every month, there are medical transit requests that go unfilled because of a shortage of volunteer command pilots. I urge my fellow pilots to take that first step. Sign up, take a command flight, and discover the true beauty of flight.

"What is the purpose of your wings? The skies are wide, and the need is constant. Use your blessings for others."
